This was reported by Marco Antonio Bravo Fabián, director of the Quintana Roo Institute of Innovation and Technology, who explained that digital nomads are people dedicated to information technologies, from architects of mobile applications, specialized software developers, people dedicated to advertising design or some others specialized in the development of pay-per-click campaigns, whose work can be done remotely from a computer, allowing them to travel around different cities of the world.

The official explained that the ranking that places Playa del Carmen in fifth place internationally is the so-called Coworking, but there are other lists that elaborate different agencies such as the Nomad List, where Cancun is on the site number 17 above other cities such as Richmond, Stockholm or Los Angeles. In this last ranking they value varied aspects such as internet speed, security, air quality, cost of living, climate, nightlife, among others.

Although he acknowledged that there is still no record of the number of travelers that the Mexican Caribbean is capturing, it is evident the importance they are charging, as different hotels in the area are modifying their spaces to offer connectivity with latest generation fiber optic to ensure optimal speeds of connection to Internet that allow the development of any remote activity, from videoconferences to data transmission with great stability.

Bravo Fabián gave as an example the most recent investment of 2 million dollars by Original Group in the three resorts that they have in Cancun and the Riviera Maya to introduce optical fiber in the buildings and provide them with the best digital connectivity in the entire Mexican Caribbean.

High salaries

The director of the Quintana Roo Institute of Innovation and Technology added that the digital nomad is characterized by high salaries. The United States is currently the main issuing market for these travelers.

Their average stays extend for up to three weeks or even a month and around them dynamic cooperative work (coworking) is generated, which allows attracting more nomad travelers from different disciplines, he explained.

Marco Antonio Bravo said that from the institute he heads is working on the organization of a coworking circuit between Cancun and the Riviera Maya to establish a new economic dynamics dedicated to information technology that can capture these new travelers , also consolidate an industry dedicated to the digital world that allows to diversify the economy of the state, today dependent almost entirely on tourism.

They are also promoting the creation of a product club so that the Tourist Promotion Council of Quintana Roo will generate campaigns and strategies to attract this segment to the different destinations in the Mexican Caribbean.
