To care for and preserve the richness and natural beauty of Tulum and the Chacmuchuc peninsular area of Isla Mujeres, a technical team works on the integration of the files required to be declared Sustainable Tourism Development Zones, informed the government of the state of Quintana Roo.
The project is in charge of a technical team composed of representatives of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur), the National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur), the State Secretariat of Tourism (Sedetur) and the municipalities of Tulum and Isla Mujeres.
According to the Sedetur, the Zones of Sustainable Tourism Development are a recognized figure in the General Tourism Law (2006), but there is no precedent of declaration in any state of the country, which represents for Quintana Roo the possibility of having the first in the country to continue conserving the natural beauties, of which we live and which are the local pride, informed the government of the state.
Tulum reflects a population growth of 24% in just eight years; Isla Mujeres did so at a
percentage of 22%, according to estimates from the National Population Council.
In 2017, Quintana Roo registered around 17 million tourists, which represents a growth
of 5.3% compared to 2016.
The Zones of Sustainable Tourism Development have an active tourism industry, they have
attractions that are used and will be exploited in the future; In addition, they meet
criteria for sustainability, conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in their
planning and operation to consolidate tourism activity as a source of quality employment,
investment, training and development with which to improve the standard of living of people.
